Plitvice Lakes shortlisted for 'New World Wonder' status
18 February 2009Croatia's spectacular Plitvice Lakes have been shortlisted for the status of New World Wonder.
The lakes - which are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - have been forwarded on to the second round of the New Seven Wonders competition, Find-Croatia reported.
Located in the Lika-Senj region of the country, Plitvice Lakes are visited by countless tourists to Croatia each year and were among the initial 261 attractions from 222 nations to enter the scheme.
Other sites up for the awards are Greece's the Acropolis, the US's Statue of Liberty and the UK's Stonehenge.
The ultimate decision on which locations get handed the status belongs to the public, who have until 2011 to vote on the sites they believe deserve world wonder recognition.
Aside from Plitvice, Croatia is home to an abundance of national parks and natural attractions, including Sjeverni Velebit, Krka and Paklenica.
