Rijeka festival charms 100,000
25 February 2009Carnival fever attracted up to 100,000 to the Croatian resort of Rijeka this month, it has been reported.
According to Javno, a local entertainment portal, thousands of revellers were in attendance for the town's festival, which also entertained visitors from neighbouring Serbia, Macedonia and Montengro.
Writing for Javno, Karmen Horvat noted: "The carnival procession is the pinnacle of the carnival period, not only in this area, but is also the biggest and most famous carnival in Croatia.
"Costume themes at the Rijeka procession ranged from fantasy, like cartoon characters
to entirely original masks crafted by imaginative carnival-goers, with months of effort put into them."
After a day of riotous antics, the carnival was finally closed with a performance by 250 local bell-ringers.
Rijeka was not the only location in Croatia with a carnival spirit though, as Split hosted an evening of mambo music and dance over the weekend, the Croatian Times reported.
