September may be ultimate time for active Croatia holiday
15 July 2010Tourists hoping to stay fit and healthy on their summer holiday may wish to consider a break in Croatia.
Lonely Planet's Tom Hall, writing for the Guardian in response to a travel question about the country, says the peaks around Makarska are an ideal spot for a range of activities.
He also suggests heading to the Dalmatian coast in September - rather than the most popular month of August - may be a good idea as it will be quieter but most attractions will still be open and running.
Among the pursuits Mr Hall says can be enjoyed on Mount Biokovo and other slopes in the area are hiking, mountain biking and rafting.
However, those who plan to tackle some of the activities on offer should be wary the area is best for the "very active", in the words of the travel expert.
Alternatively, heading to the highest spot in Croatia - Dinara, which stands 1,831 metres above sea level - may be of interest to fit travellers.
