Serbian tourism 'not a whim' for Croatia

Croatia is stepping up its drive to attract tourists from its neighbour Serbia, it has been reported.

Specifically, the Istrian resort of Labin and its hoteliers are looking to attract more visitors from the former Yugoslav nation, according to B92.

Among the attractions of Croatia, the publication states, are its prices, which are comparable to many of those found in Serbia.

Edi Cernjul, a hotel owner in Labin, told the news agency: "We have many guests from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Russia, etc.

"It is normal for the Serbian market to be interesting to us, to expect guests, and it's not a whim."

Mr Cernjul added that it was "long-term" strategy to turn Croatia into a holiday destination for Serbian tourists.

In 2008, the country attracted more than 87,000 visits from Serbia, according to official statistics.
