Sixteen world records set at event in Croatia
15 December 2008The European Short-Course Championships, which took place in Rijeka in Croatia, saw 16 new world records achieved for swimming over four days.
Amaury Leveaux from France set his fourth world record in the city and the fifth in nine days by winning a heat of the men's 50 metre butterfly race.
The 23-year-old, who broke the record he set earlier in the week, later won the race for his fourth gold medal at the 12th staging of the event.
Leveaux also competed in the 4x50 freestyle relay in which his team set a new world record, first in a heat and later in the final, breaking their previous record.
Earlier in the event, British swimmer James Goddard won the men's 200 metre individual medley in one minute 53.46 seconds, which is 1.5 seconds faster than his personal best.
In second place was Vytautas Janusaitis of Lithuania and Alan Cabello of Spain came in third, in a race which saw Great Britain gain its first gold medal at the event.
