Flakes were reported on Velebit over the weekend following a period of rain and sleet, the Croatian Times reports Jutarnji List as stating.

With almost half of October still to come, the early arrival of snow may be a boost for those planning to go skiing or snowboarding in Croatia this year.

Indeed, the news source notes the extreme weather is "heralding a white winter", which would be ideal for those relying on the slopes being covered.

According to weather experts in the nation, the weekend's drop in temperature is here to stay, with more snow predicted to fall over the coming days.

Meterological chiefs in Croatia last week forecasted this winter will be one of the coldest and whitest in the country's inland areas, the same publication reported.
