Soprano may inspire musical visits to Croatia
25 March 2010The recent performances of a Croatian soprano at the Royal Opera House in London may have persuaded many to take a holiday in the Balkan country and check out the music scene for themselves.
Renata Pokupic performed throughout George Friedrich Handel's Tamerlano's 15-night stay at the iconic venue, for which 2,268 tickets were sold each night, according to the Croatian Times.
Ms Pokupic was the first Croatian singer to perform at the opera house in several decades.
Her appearance in the show came under director Graham Vick and conductor Ivor Bolton.
Milka Trnina, Zinka Kunc, Ruza Pospis Baldani and Ljiljana Molnar-Talajic are among those to have gone before her, the newspaper states.
Her achievement may inspire some to visit Croatia, which has a rich opera history - especially in the Split area.
Shortly before Christmas, Jose Carreras of Three Tenors fame performed as part of a charity concert in the country.
