Split to host world powerboat championship
02 April 2009The Dalmatian city of Split is to host the opening round of the world powerboat championship, it has been revealed.
Powerboat P1 Management has announced that it has struck a deal with the Croatian location to hold the race at the 2010 tournament.
The event will also coincide with the city's annual Croatia Boat Show, giving visitors an added incentive to holiday in Split next summer.
Robert Wicks, Powerboat P1 commercial director, commented: "The event will generate significant inward investment for the local economy [and] will help to raise the profile of the city and the country as a leading water sport destination."
He added that the event and its subsequent media coverage would also help to extend the country's tourist season.
According to figures published by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics in February, more than 11.25 million people visited the country in 2008.
