Stay in Dalmatian accommodation to solve Croatian island "mystery"
09 June 2010The islands off Croatia's Dalmatian coast are one of the country's most popular attractions to those who head there on holiday.
But, according to the Croatian Times, nobody seems to know exactly how many islands there are.
There are at least five different figures offered by organisations - ranging from Istria.com's suggestion of 1,233 to the 1,246 predicted by the Department of Cartography at the Croatian Hydrographic Institute.
"Just with aerial photographs it is hard to prove what is an island, reef or a skerry," Pijo Brocic, chief of the department, tells the newspaper.
Tourists who take flights to Croatia and stay in accommodation close to the coast may be in the ideal position to provide an answer to what the publication labels a "mystery".
Or, at the very least, enjoy as many of them as possible.
In addition to the islands, the cities of Split and Dubrovnik are both on the mainland coast and can be easily added to any trip.
