Super ship docks in Split
15 October 2009Ship fanatics may want to visit Split after it was revealed the Croatian city has taken delivery of a new £22 million vessel.
The ship, named Alfa, will be put to work in the Adriatic Sea carrying out tasks such as fire-fighting, recovering oil and towing smaller boats.
Alfa is 65 metres in length and has a top speed of 15 knots.
It was built in Damen Shipyards Galati - a Romanian shipyard - before sailing to Split.
An identical ship is also thought to be under construction and will arrive in Croatia in December.
The chance to see Alfa could be a reason for people to add themselves to the increasing numbers of tourists visiting Split.
It was reported by the Association of Croatian Travel Agencies last month that 2009 has been a good year for the city's tourist industry.
A spokesman said the Statue of Gregory Nin was a highlight for tourists and could be behind steady visitor levels despite the credit crunch.
