Swimming event to take place in Rijeka

The 12th European Short Course Swimming Championships are to take place this week from December 11th to 14th in Rijeka in Croatia.

A total of 40 countries have entered the event with 530 athletes set to take part, including nine Olympic champions who will compete in various events.

The event will give the swimmers a chance to show their potential for the next Olympic Games in 2012 in London and will reveal medal hopefuls for the future competition.

According to entries for the event, there will be new European Champions made in Rijeka in 17 of the 34 individual races.

The annual International Carnival of Rijeka is to take place early next year and will involve ancient folklore elements and mythology.

It is a 100-year-old tradition which is a blend of customs, including the making of ugly masks to scare away evil forces, and it attracts carnival groups, spectators and guests from Croatia and abroad.
