Tennis hero Cilic scoops Chennai open
12 January 2009Croatian tennis hero Marin Cilic has scooped the highly-coveted Chennai Open after defeating Somdev Devvarman in a fiercely-contested final.
Despite admirable resilience from the Indian, 20-year-old Cilic was able to keep his cool and see off his opponent in spectacular fashion.
After managing to come through six break points in the initial seven games unscathed, the Zagreb native landed first prize with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory.
Cilic said: "We played a really good match.
"It wasn't the best in a tennis way, but in a fight way it was a good one, especially because of the crowd and their support."
Despite originally hailing from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cilic has made Zagreb his home in recent years, perhaps due to the Croatian capital's sporting heritage, which includes a number of highly-competitive teams and events.
