Tourists invited to travel to Croatia for international carnival
11 November 2010British tourists could be among those travelling to Croatia early in 2011 for the internationally-acclaimed Rijeka Carnival.
Kicking off on January 21st, the celebration features a number of processions, musical performances and a masked marathon.
It begins with the handing over of the ancient town keys and ends on February 6th with the grand parade.
The date of the carnival's climax is specifically chosen as Shrove Tuesday, as Rijeka's shrove-tide traditions date back to the prehistoric ages.
Organisers say they promise to observe the special practices of the past while also attempting to create history of their own, in a fun and imaginative way.
Other activities on the agenda for the 2011 festival include a rally, a snowboard session and a carnival party.
The ancient city of Dubrovnik, located in the south of Croatia, has also recently confirmed plans for a carnival this winter, with the local tourist board noting it as an opportunity to discover the resort's spirit.
