Travel to Dubrovnik in March for 'top-quality oysters'
15 November 2010Oysters are a speciality enjoyed by many of the people who travel to Dubrovnik all year round, but the city's tourism board believes March is the ultimate time for tasting the seafood.
During the month, the organisation holds its annual Dubrovnik Oyster Festival, celebrating the delicacy when it is at its "fullest and most delicious".
Visitors will find ample opportunity to tuck into an oyster-based dish just hours after they have been plucked from the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.
The peak of the festival is arguably St Joseph Day – March 19th – when restaurants in Dubrovnik mark the occasion with a special range of meals.
These include oyster fritters, soup and the seafood cooked in a variety of ways, from roasted to baked.
Niko Bulic, director of the Croatian National Tourist Board, recently told the BBC he believes the high quality of food in Croatia to be one of the reasons behind the country's significant growth as a visitor destination in recent years.
