Travellers to Dubrovnik 'should use cable car to enjoy spectacular views'

People staying in Dubrovnik accommodation in the coming months have been advised to take a ride in a new cable car that is set to open in the area.

Meri Matesic, director at the Croatian National Tourist Office in London, suggests visitors to the ancient city use the facility to enjoy spectacular views.

She explains: "During the bright, sunny days visibility is up to 60 km distance, so it is expected that the cable car will become popular tourist spot and attraction again."

The cable car lifts travellers to Dubrovnik from the city up to the summit of Mount Srd, which looks over the walled conurbation.

From there, it will be possible not only to get a bird's-eye view of Dubrovnik itself, but also to look out across the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Ms Matestic says the cable car, which previously ran up until the mid-1990s, used to attract some 2.5 million people every year.

The revamped version is due to open next month, so will be available for people taking their 2010 summer holiday in Croatia.
