Visit Croatia at new year for spear fishing championship

Spear fishers are set to descend on the island of Losinj over the new year period as people from the world of spear fishing travel to Croatia for a prestigious event.

The New Year Championship – which is made up of two separate competitions – takes place on December 29th and 30th.

Competitors dive in to the waters of the picturesque Adriatic Sea, cheered on by a healthy audience, in an attempt to produce an impressive catch.

Losinj's pride in spear fishing is clearly marked all around it, with a large monument in one of its main squares dedicated to the activity.

The equally attractive New Year Cities Cup and European Nations Cup are contested in the town, with the dives in each said by the country's tourist board to take one's breath away.

People who take a holiday in Losinj are ideally located to enjoy a day trip on neighbouring islands such as Pag and Krk, while the nearest major mainland resort is Zadar.
