Zagreb bids for Miss Universe extravaganza

Zagreb has launched a bid to host this year's eagerly-awaited Miss Universe beauty pageant, it has been revealed.

According to the Croatian Times, officials in the capital are preparing to send an official application to the US in the next few days.

Representatives behind the show - which sees women scored on both beauty and intelligence - are said to be impressed with what the Croatian city has to offer.

The head of the Miss Universe Croatia organisation, Vladimir Kraljevic, told the Croatian Times: "The organisers, including Donald Trump, are really interested in having the contest in Croatia this year.

"Now, with [the] newly-built Zagreb arena, we are ready to host it, and I believe we should wait no longer."

Other destinations which have already submitted bids to host the competition include the UK, Ukraine, the Dominican Republic and Macau.

Elsewhere in Croatia, tonight (January 30th) will see the national handball team take on Poland in the semi-finals of the World Championship in Zagreb.
