Zagreb congestion charge could improve tourist experience

Plans to implement a congestion charge in Zagreb city centre have been raised - which could be good news for tourists planning to visit the area.

The Faculty of Traffic Sciences believes introducing the fee for road users to enter the middle of the city would cut congestion and pollution, reports the Croatian Times.

A reduction in the number of vehicles as a result of the charge - similar to those now found in London, Copenhagen and Stockholm - may make a Zagreb holiday more pleasant for visitors.

According to the newspaper, Croatia's capital was not designed and built to accommodate large numbers of cars and vans.

By demanding 20 kunas (£2.47), transport bosses may help to keep the roads clear and create a more relaxing atmosphere for those visiting the city.

Marko Slavulj, a traffic engineer, tells the newspaper the issue could be settled by a referendum.

Zagreb had a population of approximately 780,000 at the last census in 2001, with a quarter of the country's cars registered in the area.
