16 February 2009The Croatian capital Zagreb has been nominated for the award of Europe's most mobile city, it has been revealed.
According to the Hina news agency, as reported by the Croatian Times, the city has been short-listed along with two other destinations from across the continent.
More than 2,100 locations are said to have applied for the European Commission prize, which takes into account factors such as public transport and pedestrian facilities.
Marinka Bakula-Andelic, Zagreb co-ordinator for European Mobility Week, told the Croatian Times: "Our biggest advantage was our public transport, which we had to prove was ecologically-friendly, fast, cheap and practical.
"It was hard to demonstrate to the jury our trams were beautiful as well as functional."
Also in the frame for top honours are the Hungarian capital Budapest and Portugal's Alameda.
The winner is set to be announced by the commission next Monday (February 23rd).
